The Cell functions in tandem with the Placement Cell. The Career Counselling Cell has organised various programmes and seminars for the career guidance of the students of the College.
The Cell has organised various programmes and seminars for the proper career guidance of the students of the college. Speakers like Dr. Rama Manna and Dr. Laxmipriya Kundu were invited from the Indian Institute of Psychometry. Dr. Manna interacted with the students and defined the concept of career. It was held that a clear career goal is necessary for the evolution of a balanced personality. Career counselling is imperative to sort out the right career option for one, keeping in mind the socio economic realities. She referred to researches done by other institutes. For her, the basic problems faced by the students are:
All these make counselling necessary. Negative self esteem and grim situations at home are also points of concern for students. Frustrated, they often take recourse to drugs. To solve these problems and organise one’s personality, consultation with a career counsellor is must. Dr. Laxmipriya Kundu focussed on career guidance and strategy. She said, to choose a proper vocation one must keep in mind the personality trends and budget. She discussed various courses like medicine, event management and horticulture.
Psychometric testing covers a wide range of skills, interests and values of people and can be of use in career counselling in different ways. For example, the information won from such tests can be of help for the professionals who mentor, coach or counsel individuals. With psychometric testing, there is no pass or fail, but the quality of the information won from the tests can vary. Psychometric testing uses in-depth psychological profiles to assess personality and intellectual levels. Usually, psychometric testing uses multiple sets of questions relating to personality type, how the test taker would handle aspects of work and home life, what his or her goals are for the future and his or her strengths and weaknesses. If the test taker is honest and the employed tests follow scientific standards, the results should be fairly accurate and useful for career counselling activities. The College conducted a Psychometry Test with the help of IIP where 234 Honours and General students appeared for the test.
Indian Institute for Human Settlement (IIHS) visited the college and elicited young India’s views on urbanization challenges and supporting them in transforming the urban landscape in India. Ahana Ghosh discussed the connotation on human settlements and focussed on the drawbacks of rapid urbanization-overpopulation, unemployment, water problem, load shedding, financial corruption. Everything that is hitting us in daily life is an issue. She demanded exclusive topics for students’ exchange programme behind student awareness which might escape the adult, saturated brains. She substantiated her ideas with illustrations. A sense of settlement is a place which emanates from mental peace where basic amenities are available. She talked about the National Student Scheme whose aim is to find out the problem issues and an acceptable solution by the government. The problem should be presented on a global level. The group will be mentored by professionals for a month. This is done to encourage students, participation from the east, to network with other universities. There are certain steps to that -
Students of multiple disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object and thus in contrast to on site observation. Remote sensing is a sub-field of geography. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of aerial sensor technologies to detect and classify objects on Earth. Cartography and geoinformatics is focused on study of different aspects of analogue and digital representation of the Earth surface and all phenomena taking place in the physio-geographic and socio-economic spheres of the Earth. It is aimed on traditional component-based approach to cartography, as well as on complex solutions of problems within the frame of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing with the use of latest information technologies and software tools. Attention is paid to matters of data quality and the ability of critical selection of data from different resources according to individual requirements of different groups of users. Besides aspects related to content and technologies, attention is also paid to security and legislative aspects of spatial data handling. Students also attend to utilization of geographic information in public administration and other (private, academic) portals in the field of information policy and building of information society.
A seminar was organised on Opportunities of Remote Sensing and GIS. The speakers were Dr. Jayanta Sen and Smt. Swarnali Chatterjee of RS GIS Institute. They inaugurated the seminar with the foundations of remote sensing and described GIS as a broader spectrum to store remote sensing data. They pointed out the schemes of applying the data on- Natural Resource Management, Urban Planning, Infrastructural Facility Management, Groundwater Modelling, Wildlife Habitat Study and several others. She ushered hope with the opportunities of job in the Government Sector like NATMO, Geological Survey of India, All India Soil Survey and also in the private sector like Reliance, TSS, CDAC, RMSI, and Rolta. Training on remote sensing and GIS can be obtained from both the country and abroad according to the experts. University of California, Golden Gate University of San Francisco, Australian Universities deliver such courses. In India and specially in West Bengal, several Universities and institutes also opened up short and long term courses like IIRS, NRSC,IIT Roorkie, IBM, Vidyasagar University, NATMO, Presidency College, Jadavpur University. The website and contact numbers were also provided by the speakers.

The Cell organized an interactive session on Career Information Literacy on 28. 1.16 for all the students of the College. The chief speaker was Sm. Moumita Ash. Career Information Literacy is a combination of two words Career Literacy and Information Literacy. Digital career literacy is concerned with the ability to use the online environment, to search, to make contacts, to get questions answered and to build a positive professional reputation. Students can use a social media profile to research jobs and for professional development and commercial awareness.
The session on Career Information Literacy covered the following aspects:
The seminar on GIS-Scope and Opportunities was held on 29.2.16 and started with the new concept being analyzed to the students. The first session was conducted by Mr Animesh Majumdar of Corporate Bridge. The second session was conducted by Dr Jayanta Sen of RS-GIS Institute. Dr Jayanta Sen highlighted that most of the countries of the world have started specializing in GIS but in India the lack of skilled manpower has always been a concern. With the advent of new and advanced technology, the importance of geospatial science is going to be simplified. Accelerated growth and development prospects in India would encourage several industries and businesses to use GIS. The tools and techniques can be widely used in the fields of agriculture, irrigation, forestry transportation and others. Students from Geology, Geography, Agriculture, Engineering, IT or Computer Science, Environment and Physics have a wide scope in this regard. GIS applications are mostly being found in Forestry and Farming, Mineral Exploitation, Human Settlement, Governance of Local Bodies, Transport and Marketing. The top twelve institutes were mentioned by Dr. Sen which provide several courses for students. The website addresses were provided. The job description includes GIS Programmer, Developer, Co-ordinator, Assessment and relief measure, Lecturer, Reader, Targetting Groundwater. The seminar proved to be a very successful one for the students of the College.

A seminar was conducted by the Career Counselling Cell on 7.2.2017. The topic was Resume Building and Group Discussion Interview. The speaker was Mr Samrat Roy of Endeavor Institute. According to the speaker, taught us three things to follow- ethos, pathos and logos. Resume is when we want to present ourselves among people. There are differences between Bio Data, Curriculum Vitae and Resume. But he emphasized that anything we write about ourselves must have evidence. A resume is a bullet point document. It has nothing to do with literature or family. It should start with name and objectives in life. Then it will move on to academic qualifications and extracurricular activities. One can include her/ his hobbies also but with proper knowledge of that.
Group discussion on the other hand is a debate having multiple contestants. The time limit is there which may vary according to various companies. There may be two options in this case.one may know the topic, which will be beneficial for him/her to speak first. But if one doesnot know the topic, the the way is to sit, listen and learn first. Then speak on the topic.one is marked on argument skills, not on the knowledge of the content. One should never counter the topic in a group discussion. Another valuable advice on the speaker’s part was never to end the discussion. It does not matter if the English speaking ability is not enough. One should study the current affairs before going for group discussions. If anyone has any valid point it will be noted.
The speaker gave his mail id to the students and told them to write about the topic-Is the 2016 demonitisation an accident? He instructed the students to construct argument in this topic within 150 words. The feedback from the students as collected showed an overwhelming response. They also participated actively in the discussion. The seminar was a success and hopefully the students would be benefitted by that.
