About Department
The Chemistry Department of Vidyasagar College for Women was established on June 1, 1960, initially offering a B.Sc. Pass course along with classes for XI and XII. However, the XI and XII courses were discontinued in 1999. The Honours course in Chemistry began in 2000.
Since the introduction of the Honours course, the department has flourished due to the collective efforts of both full-time and part-time faculty, as well as the non-teaching staff. The results of both Honours and General stream students have been commendable, with many alumni securing positions in schools, colleges, and other prestigious organizations.
The department organizes various activities, including seminars, educational trips, and parent-teacher meetings. Cultural events, farewell programs, Teacher's Day celebrations, and fresher’s welcome events are also held regularly.
The department is equipped with two well-maintained wet laboratories, a laboratory instrument room, and an advanced laboratory featuring instruments such as a UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer, rotary evaporator, double distillation apparatus, hot-air oven, digital balances, research-grade polarimeter, colorimeter, conductivity bridge, potentiometer, temperature-controlled water bath, distillation sets, hot plates, magnetic stirrers, chromatography chambers, and other equipment necessary for covering the CU syllabus and basic research work.
Additionally, the department has a seminar library with relevant textbooks and reference materials. It is also equipped with two desktop computers, three laptops, one desk jet printer, and two LaserJet printers with scanner.
