About the Department

The Department of Zoology of Vidyasagar College of Women is one of the most coveted Department opted by students after qualifying +2 level. Every year the Department attracts huge application for admission by top scorers for pursuing this course in higher studies. The expansion and subsequent development since 1964 when the Department got established may be viewed in his retrospect. Initially only 20 seats were allotted for Zoology Honours Course and now the number has reached to 47. Presently, the Department is bestowed with cordial and accomplished faculties with experience in diverse fields including molecular biology, ecology, parasitology and immunology, fishery, environmental biology, endocrinology.

The faculty members and laboratory staffs as well provide very conducive and interactive atmosphere for the students in their learning process. The curriculum as designed by the University of Calcutta is well executed and hence provides an opportunity for a very comprehensive study of all the topics. The process of learning is not restricted to four-walls of teaching. The subject Zoology is such a stream that requires field study. Hence, apart from class-room teaching, power point presentation, practical classes every year we are conducting invited seminars, student seminars from diverse topics and excursions. Our students have made us proud over the years by their consistent excellent results in the college. The pass-out students have further excelled in University Exams and in the field of research in India and overseas.

The up gradation of the Department is an on-going process and currently we have got a new Zoology Laboratory in the new building of the college. Also, the Department has a well-organized museum, a small library and laptops with internet connection. The Department is fully functional and have well-developed infrastructure with all required instruments for practical learning.

The Department has made remarkable strides during these past years and is committed to continue working hard for excellence in Science. With cordial, talented and hard-working faculty, staff and sincere students, the Zoology Department, VCFW is in a continuous process of betterment. Our little organization utilizes all possible opportunities and participates in diverse events. Be it extra-curricular, co-curricular and athletics in addition to academics, life is active around and beyond the boundaries. We value continuous learning and embrace all similarities and differences to create equity and inclusive programme.
