About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Sanskrit!

The Department of Sanskrit is dedicated to the study and promotion of one of the world's oldest and most influential languages. Known as the "language of the Gods". Sanskrit has a rich heritage that spans thousands of years, with profound contributions to Literature, Philosophy, Science, and spiritual traditions. Our Department offers a comprehensive curriculum that not only focuses on the linguistic aspects of Sanskrit but also immerses students in its vast literary, cultural, and philosophical treasures, including the Vedas, Upanishads, epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and classical texts across diverse fields.

The Department of Sanskrit was founded in 1960 with a view to establish a strong base of literature studies among the students as Sanskrit is considered as the mother language of all Indian languages. The Department is one of the oldest Departments of the College and has been enriched with various books in the library which will help the students to learn this ancient language. Though this Department only offers B. A General Course (3 year UG Programme), it aims to open B.A Honours Course (4 year UG Programme) in near future as this Department has two permanent faculties and adequate books, journals and other facilities. Our Department also has started an add-on course ‘Cultural Heritage of India’ on IKS and also has organized seminars on IKS.

Through expert faculty, dynamic courses, and research opportunities, the department fosters an environment that encourages both academic excellence and a deeper understanding of ancient wisdom. We invite all students, regardless of their background, to explore the timeless beauty of Sanskrit and its continuing relevance in the modern world.

Join us on a journey of intellectual discovery, cultural enrichment, and spiritual growth.
